この家づくりは、奥さまのご病気をきっかけに始まりました。
いずれは車椅子での生活となり、やがては寝たきりになる——そんな状況を前に、できるだけ開放的で、明るい空間で、前向きに暮らすことを奥様とご家族は考えていました。

同時に奥さまからは、「家のかたちをした外観にしてほしい」という少し珍しいご要望もありました。
それは、ご自身が育ってきた札幌の古い町並みへの、深い愛着からくるものでした。

しかし、周囲はフラットな陸屋根の家々が並ぶ新しい住宅街。
その中で「家のかたち」が持つ意味をもう一度考え直したとき、
それは単なる形ではなく、“屋内と屋外を分けるためのシンボル”であることに気づきました。

そこで私たちは、その「家のかたち」をひとつのモチーフとして、家の中にいくつも配置する構成を考えました。
6つの小さな“家型”を並べ、それら全体をひとつの大きな屋根で覆うことで、
屋内でありながら、まるで“屋根のある屋外”のような、広がりのある空間が生まれます。

室内にいながら、屋外にいるような気持ちよさを感じること。
そして、北海道の寒さの中でも快適に暮らせること。
それらを両立するために、温熱環境には十分に配慮し、高断熱・高気密としました。

自由とは、選択肢があるということかもしれません。
この住宅では、異なる性格を持った空間が家の中に点在し、
住まい手はそのときの気分や身体感覚に合わせて居場所を選ぶことができます。
私たちは、集落のように多様で、行き先のある空間をつくることで、
日々の暮らしにささやかな自由が生まれると考えました。

The design of this house began with the wife’s illness.
In anticipation that she would eventually need a wheelchair and later become bedridden, she and her family wished to live as positively as possible—in a space that felt open and full of light.

At the same time, the wife made an unusual request: she wanted the house to look like a traditional “house shape” from the outside.
This desire came from a deep affection for the old residential streets of Sapporo where she had grown up.

However, the surrounding neighborhood consists mostly of flat-roofed, modern houses.
Reconsidering the meaning of the “house shape” in this context, we came to see it not merely as a form,
but as a symbol that conventionally separates indoors from outdoors.

So we developed a concept in which this symbolic “house shape” appears multiple times—inside the house.
By arranging six small house-shaped volumes beneath one large overarching roof,
we created an interior landscape that feels like a “roofed outdoor space,” despite being completely enclosed.

The result is a home that offers the psychological openness of the outdoors,
while maintaining the thermal comfort essential for Hokkaido’s cold climate.
To achieve this balance, the house was carefully designed with high insulation and airtightness.

We believe that freedom comes from having options.
In this house, spaces with distinct characters are scattered throughout,
allowing the residents to choose where to be—depending on mood, time of day, or physical condition.
Like walking through a small village, each place offers a different experience.
We hoped to create a home where this gentle richness of choice could bring comfort and dignity to everyday life.
